Every face, every call time, beautifully billed.

What to include on a makeup artist invoice

  • Per-face service list

List each person and service: bride, bridesmaids, mothers, flower girls. Per-face pricing is common, so the count should be easy to verify.

  • Call time and location

Note the start time and where you set up, plus any early-start fee. A 5 a.m. call is a different job from a noon one.

  • Trial session

Bill the trial as its own line, or note that it's already been paid. It's where the look gets agreed, and clients like seeing it accounted for.

  • Travel and on-location fees

Travel beyond your base area, parking and on-site waiting time are real costs. Put them on separate lines so the makeup price itself stays clear.

Billing tips for makeup artists.

  • Lock the head count early

Set a deadline, often a week or two before the date, to confirm the number of faces. Bill to that count even if someone changes their mind on the day.

  • Charge for touch-up time

If the client wants you to stay through photos or the ceremony, bill it as hourly on-site time. Staying or leaving should be a clear, priced choice.

  • Use a day rate for shoots

Editorial, film and commercial clients usually book by the day or half day. Add a kit fee for products used, and bill overtime past the agreed wrap time.

Makeup Artist invoicing, answered.

How do makeup artists usually charge for weddings?

Pricing is typically per person, with a higher rate for the bride, plus fees for trials, early starts, travel and touch-up time. Many artists also set a minimum number of faces for on-location bookings.

What is a kit fee?

A kit fee covers the products and sanitation supplies used on a shoot or production, separate from the artist's time. It's more common on commercial, film and editorial work than on weddings.

Do makeup artists charge sales tax?

Some states tax cosmetic or personal care services, and retail products you sell, like a lipstick for touch-ups, are often taxable. Rules vary, so check your state's requirements before adding tax.
