Tips for Canadian businesses registered for GST/HST.

  • Charge the rate for the place of supply

The rate depends on the province or territory where the sale is considered to be made, which isn't always where your business is. The place-of-supply rules differ for goods and services, so check the CRA's guidance or ask an accountant.

  • Know which provinces use HST

New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island charge 15% HST, Nova Scotia 14% and Ontario 13%. Elsewhere you charge 5% GST, and some provinces add their own sales tax with separate rules.

  • Put every detail on every invoice

The requirements grow at $100 and again at $500. Including all of them every time means you never need to check which tier a sale falls in.

Do I have to charge GST/HST if I'm not registered?

If you're a small supplier and choose not to register, you don't charge GST/HST and you can't claim input tax credits. You're generally a small supplier while your worldwide taxable supplies, including those of associates, are $30,000 or less in a single calendar quarter and over the last four consecutive quarters. Once you pass that, you must register, and the effective-date rules can mean charging tax on the sale that took you over, so speak to an accountant.

Should my invoice say GST or HST?

Use the tax that applies where the supply is made: HST at 13% in Ontario, for example, or GST at 5% in Alberta. Set the tax name and rate in the invoice generator to match.

Why does the sale amount change what I need to show?

The CRA sets out what your customers need on an invoice to claim input tax credits in three tiers: under $100, $100 to $499.99, and $500 or more. Each tier adds details, such as your registration number from $100 and the buyer's name from $500.

Is US Letter the right paper size for Canada?

Yes, letter-size paper is the everyday standard in Canada, which is why this template uses it. You can switch to A4 in the generator at any time.

Is this template free to use?

Yes. Open it in the invoice generator, replace the sample details with your own and download a PDF. No sign-up, no watermark.

Can I add my own logo and colours?

Yes. Upload your logo, choose a design and pick an accent colour, or enter your own hex value. 3 designs are free; Pro unlocks all 48.
