Tax Invoice Template for Australia

This tax invoice template for Australia is set up for Australian dollars, A4 paper and GST at 10%. A tax invoice is what a GST-registered business gives its customers, and the ATO sets out seven details it must show, plus one more for sales of $1,000 or more. The checklist below follows the ATO's guidance, so you can check each invoice before it goes out.

Seven details, one clean page.

What an Australian tax invoice must include

  • That it's a tax invoice

The document must show it's intended to be a tax invoice. The ATO says GST-registered businesses should call their invoices 'tax invoice'.

  • The seller's identity

Your business or trading name, so the buyer can tell who made the sale.

  • The seller's ABN

Your Australian business number. If you don't quote one, a business paying you more than $75 (excluding GST) generally has to withhold tax at the top rate.

  • The date of issue

The date the tax invoice was issued.

  • A description of what was sold

A brief description of each item, including the quantity (if applicable) and the price.

  • The GST amount

Show the GST payable separately or, if GST is exactly 1/11 of the total price, include a statement such as 'Total price includes GST'.

  • Which sales are taxable

Make clear the extent to which each item is a taxable sale. If the invoice mixes taxable items with GST-free or input-taxed ones, show which are taxable, the GST payable and the total.

  • The buyer's identity or ABN, from $1,000

Tax invoices for sales of $1,000 or more must also show the buyer's identity or ABN. An invoice that meets this rule works for smaller sales too.

Tips for Australian businesses registered for GST.

  • Provide one within 28 days of a request

If a customer asks for a tax invoice, you must provide one within 28 days, unless the sale is $82.50 (including GST) or less.

  • Email a PDF if you prefer

A tax invoice doesn't need to be on paper. The ATO accepts a PDF sent by email, as long as it contains all the required information.

  • Watch the GST threshold

You must register for GST once your GST turnover reaches $75,000 or you expect it to, and you have 21 days to do so. Below that, registration is generally optional.

Australia invoices, answered.

Do I have to charge GST if I'm not registered?

No. If you're not registered for GST, don't include GST in your prices or call your invoices 'tax invoice'; issue a standard invoice that shows GST isn't included. You must register once your GST turnover reaches $75,000, and some businesses, such as taxi and ride-sourcing drivers, must register whatever their turnover.

What's the difference between an invoice and a tax invoice?

A tax invoice is issued by a GST-registered business and carries the details the ATO requires, including your ABN and the GST. GST-registered customers rely on it to claim GST credits for their purchases.

Does a tax invoice need the buyer's details?

Only for sales of $1,000 or more, where it must show the buyer's identity or ABN. Adding the buyer's name to every invoice is a simple habit that covers both cases.

How do I show GST in the generator?

Set the tax name to GST and the rate to 10% in the invoice generator, and the GST appears as its own line. The generator applies one rate per invoice, so if a sale mixes taxable and GST-free items, ask your accountant how best to present it.

Is this template free to use?

Yes. Open it in the invoice generator, replace the sample details with your own and download a PDF. No sign-up, no watermark.

Can I add my own logo and colours?

Yes. Upload your logo, choose a design and pick an accent colour, or enter your own hex value. 3 designs are free; Pro unlocks all 48.
